Air pollution knows no boundaries.
Particulate matter travels long distances through the air, ignoring man-made national boundaries and probably feeling nothing when it comes to the concept of "nation".
However, most of the particulate matter in our air is produced by ourselves. They come from our industrial furnaces and power plants, from the construction industry, from cement production, from tire and brake wear on our vehicles, and, to a lesser extent, from our own human bodies. Cells and hair become part of the public realm, just as the public realm becomes part of us when we inhale and the fine particles enter the bloodstream through our lungs. The question arises: where do we end and where does the city begin?
